The "Internet Comes to You" project is on the road
Monday, November 15, 2004

Promoted by the Portugal Telecom Foundation and with the support of the Évora Town Council and the Chairmen of the Council Boroughs, the “Internet Comes to You” project began today and will take place throughout the 19 municipal boroughs during approximately one month.

The presentation of the “Internet Comes to You” project was carried out in the Main Hall at the Évora City Hall. Norberto Fernandes, Chairman of the Portugal Telecom Foundation, Iriarte Esteves, Executive Administrator of the PT Group as well as José Ernesto Oliveira, Mayors of the Évora Council were present.

This project’s objective is to divulge and stimulate the use of communication technologies and Internet through the use of a bus equipped with computers which will function as a classroom to whoever wants to familiarize themselves with computers and the internet without any age or basic know-how restrictions. The bus has 12 computers which will be used in three daily sessions every two hours, where two qualified monitors will make the use of computers and internet navigation accessible to those who attend these sessions. The participants will be given an attendance certificate as well as electronic mail boxes. This project is aimed mostly at adults who for one reason or another, have difficulties in dealing with new technologies who will be given an opportunity to start working with information and communication technologies.

The Portugal Telecom Foundation hopes to stimulate the regular use of applications that are of public interest, namely the Citizen Portal as well as municipal portals, job search and others.

“Opening the Doors to the Communication Society”

For the Chairman of the Portugal Telecom Foundation “this project illustrates that PT is a company with great social responsibilities. In Portugal, the level of education of adults for information technology is very low. There is more and more competitiveness and a greater demand and this project makes it possible for people who have never had any contact with information technologies to get a closer look at the Internet, and thus fills in a void which exists within this area”. Norberto Fernandes also said that “I hope that this initiative will tickle people’s fancy to continue using the Internet in the future”.

Iriarte Esteves, Administrator of the PT Group added that” this initiative by the Portugal Foundation is an example of how many doors can be open to citizens, regardless of their age, of academic training and who have never had any contact with information technologies”.

The Mayor of the Évora Town Council stated that “Évora is thankful to the PT Group for being the first town in which this project comes into contact with the people. This is, not only an important initiative for the qualification of the population but also to bring the citizens who are not aware of the advantages of internet in their daily lives closer to each other”.
