News and the weather with TMN’s new 3G service Wednesday, December 22, 2004

With 12400, the new service launched today based on videocall, TMN clients with 3rd Generation mobile telephones can now access the news, the weather and the “Contra-Informação” programme. This is yet another innovative service of TMN. Easy to use and with the help of “Rita” who is back and explains it all.

TMN launched today, the 21st of December, the 12400 Video service, aimed at 3rd Generation mobile telephones. With a videocall to the number 12400, clients of the Portugal Telecom Groups mobile operator will have access to various informative and leisure contents that are transmitted live or deferred.

After videocall and videomail, 12400 video is yet another innovative service of TMN in Portugal. Miguel Spinola said “We are almost pioneers at a European level because there is only one other country that has developed this”, during a meeting with journalists to present this new product.

Some of the services which can be accessed are television information, namely the news with RTP, SIC and TVI, and SIC Noticias. From the news items, the TMN client who has a UMTS mobile telephone can also select to view items either in full or by topic. Weather information is exclusive to TVI and you can have access to the programme “Contra-Informação” through RTP.

All of this is done with the same ease as TMN clients have when accessing other services. According to Filipa Nascimento, Marketing Director at TMN, the objective is to reproduce the same swiftness that consumers have when accessing second generation services while using UMTS. “The transition must be easy. Only with this can we massify these new services”.

After videomail, Rita, the virtual assistant (Avatar) is back on the screen of TMN UMTS mobile telephones and explains all the steps.

The launch price for this service is 20 cents per minute which is fractioned to 10 seconds after the first minute. This tariff is valid until the 30th of June 2005.

Pertaining to the number of existing 3G terminals in Portugal, those responsible at TMN added at the presentation of 12400 video that the objective is to reach between 10 and 20 thousand terminals in the market until the end of the year. UMTS coverage reaches “50% of the population which surpassed the limit imposed on the operator during its first year”.
