Milton Hatoum wins the PT Award for Brazilian Literature

The winner for the 2006 PT Award for Brazilian Literature is writer Miltom Hatoum, with the novel "Cinzas do Norte". For 2007, a new format was created with the objective of distinguishing the best in Portuguese literature. Therefore, all novels published in Brazil and written in Portuguese can compete
Yesterday, the winners of the 2006 edition of the Portugal Telecom Award for Brazilian Literature were announced. The three winners, elected by a jury, from ten finalists, received respectively, an award of Brazilian Real 100 thousand (36 thousand euros), Brazilian Real 35 thousand (12,5 thousand euros) e Brazilian Real 15 thousand (5,5 thousand euros). The awarding ceremony took place in Sao Paulo and counted with the presence of the Chairman for PT International Investments, João Pedro Batista and the Chairman of Portugal Telecom Brazil, Shakhaf Wine, who announced the winners.

Shakhaf Wine, Chairman of Portugal Telecom Brazil | The winner this year, Miltom Hatoum, is currently a literature professor and author of three novels. The novel which won the award, "Cinzas do Norte", tells the story of a wandering generation which is searching for a safe port. This is his third book. The second and third prizes were awarded respectively to Alberto Martins, with "A História dos Ossos", and Ricardo Lísias, with "Duas Praças”.
With the objective of guaranteeing greater literary exchange amongst countries with Portuguese language, the PT Group presented, at the ceremony, a new format for this literary distinction on 2007.

Milton Hatoum won the 4th PT Brazilian Literature Award | Next year, all novels published in Brazil which are written in Portuguese, regardless of the nationality of the author, will be able to compete for the new Portugal Telecom Award for Portuguese Literature. According to Shakhaf Wine, “regardless of ethnics or nationality, Portugal Telecom is tied to the Portuguese language, therefore, in 2007, the award with bring prestige to the creation of Portuguese literature. We believe that this new award will stimulate knowledge of the present and future of Brazil, of Portugal and other Portuguese speaking African countries and will also feed a relationship of historical bases”. The 2007 Portugal Telecom Award for Portuguese Literature will be awarded to the three best books, originally written in Portuguese and published in Brazil in 2006, in the categories of: novel, story, poetry, chronicles, drama, biography and biographic rehearsal.

Milton Hatoum was born in the Amazon and lives in Sao Paulo. He is a literature professor whose works have been translated into various languages. Milton Hatoun has written three novels. The third, “Cinzas do Norte”, mixes a personal account of a friendship with the recent history of Brazil. The story is of a wandering generation in search of a safe port. mhatoum@uol.com.br
ALBERTO MARTINS - HISTÓRIA DOS OSSOS Alberto Martins is a poet and plastic artist. Born in Santos. The city and the port served as inspiration and are present in “História dos ossos”. The book came from notes which he began writing in 1978. In it we find the duality of a person from Santos – from the frivolous beaches, to the pulse of an industrial port. alberto@editora34.com.br

In 2005, competing with work published in 2004, the winners were: in 1st place, the story teller Amílcar Bettega Barbosa, with “Os lados do círculo”; 2nd place, Silviano Santiago, with the novel “O falso mentiroso”; 3rd place, Edgard Telles
Ribeiro, with “Histórias mirabolantes de amores clandestinos”.
In 2004, competing with work published in 2003, the winners were: in 1st place, the poet Paulo Henriques Britto, with “Macau”; 2nd place, Sérgio Sant’Anna, with the collection of stories “O vôo da madrugada”; and Luiz Antonio de Assis Brasil, with “A margem imóvel do rio”.
In 2003, competing with work published in 2002, the winners were: in 1st place, Dalton Trevisan, with “Pico na veia”, and Bernardo Carvalho, with “Nove noites”; 2nd place, the poet Sebastião Uchôa Leite, with “A regra secreta”; 3rd place, the poet Mario Chamie, with “Horizonte de esgrimas”.
