TMN delivered 300,000 laptops in one and a half years
Monday, December 29, 2008
TMN has already delivered in excess of 300,000 PCs with broadband access, in the scope of the e.escola program. The assumed three-year goal was reached in half the time originally predicted. TMN assumed the leadership right from the start of the program and currently has the most diversified offering in terms of features
The official presentation, on 31 May 2007, made by the Government and the Portuguese mobile operators, of programs e.escola (students from secondary school), e.professor (teachers from basic and secondary schools) and e.oportunidades (adult citizens registered in the New Opportunities initiative), aimed to provide over 600,000 Portuguese with laptop PCs featuring broadband Internet access.
 | Portugal Telecom fostered this program from the start through TMN and assumed the leading position in this project. Thus, it was the first operator to present a concrete PC plus broadband Internet access offering, materialised on 21 July 2007 through the delivery of 400 laptop PCs to adult students from the New Opportunities program.
TMN assumed publicly that it would deliver 300,000 laptop PCs with mobile broadband access over a three-year period. This number represents about half the Government program, comprising the three initiatives. At the end of November 2008, i.e. just one and a half years after the launch of the initiative, TMN had already surpassed the predicted goal. A big contribution to this success came from the fact that TMN is the operator with the most diversified PC offering in terms of features, as the result of partnerships with several national and international brands. It should be recollected that TMN was the only operator to set up a distribution agreement with Insys, a national PC brand.
On the frontline of e.escola, TMN has been taking the project extensions of inclusion of new school years (on 10 March 2008, for students from the 11th and 12th school years; on 22 June 2008, for students from the 7th, 8th and 9th school years) as opportunities to present an even more diversified offering and to deliver the requested PCs to their recipients in as little time as possible.
In the beginning of October 2008, TMN launched the digital contract aiming to shorten the
time elapsed between the registration and the delivery of the PC. This contract guarantees that the e.escola registration process can be done without papers and without bureaucracy. This PT-sponsored project, contributes to the transversal fulfilment of the different needs of use of PCs and Internet access. Portugal Telecom assumes itself as the key operator in the e.escola program, one of the cornerstones of the National Technological Plan, and its performance in the scope of education demonstrates its great bet in the country’s modernisation and in building a better future for every Portuguese.
