PT associated with centenary celebration of the Republic
Wednesday, July 08, 2009
The National Committee for the Centenary Celebration of the Republic just presented the Republic Centenary Portal.

Artur Santos Silva and Zeinal
Bava presented the  Republic
Centenary Portal
Multi-platform, interactivity and geo-referentiation are key factors of the new Republic Centenary Portal, according to the words of PT’s chief executive. The portal was presented today at Portugal Telecom’s headquarters in Lisbon, being a joint initiative of the National Committee for the Centenary Celebration of the Republic (CNCCR) and of PT through SAPO.

The Republic Centenary Portal is part of the Centenary Celebration of the Republic, which will start in January 2010 in the city of Porto. The programmed activities include exhibitions, scientific meetings, city tours, games, competitions and school initiatives. Available at http://centenariorepublica.sapo.pt/ and http://www.centenariorepublica.pt/, the portal is a major instrument of dissemination of the Celebration programming. Besides it aims to become an interactive space that appeals to citizens’ frequent participation.

Paulo Soares (CNCCR) and Gonçalo
Araújo (SAPO) disclosed the
potentialities of the Portal

The conversations with Portugal Telecom started in October 2008, the project having been developed in circa six months. In Zeinal Bava’s words, Portugal Telecom is proud to “participate in this project and historic milestone”. PT’s chief executive said that the goal was to develop a site that would benefit from the different company platforms. Therefore, the Republic Centenary Portal shall evolve throughout time and present new features based on PT’s resources “so that every Portuguese may get a clear idea of what this celebration stands for”.

For example, the portal will enable a multi-channel relationship with citizens who will be able to communicate via Internet as well as via mobile phones

through SMS and MMS messages. The main goal is to make the portal a meeting point for all information and ways of participation relative to the centenary celebration.

Artur Santos Silva, chairman of the National Committee for the Centenary Celebration of the Republic, thanked for PT’s commitment and stressed that “the portal will be our main instrument of communication and of mobilisation of society at large for the Centenary Celebration”. It is a strategic bi-directional communication channel, as was pointed out by Paulo Soares from CNCCR.

Gonçalo Araújo, from the Technology Department of the SAPO portal, explained how the Republic Centenary Portal is organised as well as the different areas within this communication channel, which aims to be a reference for the Portuguese population at large as well as for the academic and student community.

A cooperation protocol between CNCCR and PT was signed during the presentation of the portal.
