According to Zeinal Bava, PT keeps
committed to establishing partnerships
that bring advantages for consumers

The first Windows® Phone smartphones were launched worldwide on 6 October, a TMN exclusive in Portugal: TMN Bluebelt II, TMN Silverbelt, Samsung Omnia II i8000 and Samsung LITE B7300. With this launch, TMN customers are among the first in the world to enjoy a new mobility experience through full task integration and a balanced combination of hardware, applications, services and an extremely simple and intuitive interface.

During the press conference to present Windows Phone, Zeinal Bava, chief executive officer of Portugal Telecom highlighted the importance of the relationship between Portugal Telecom and Microsoft. We were the first to launch the first smartphone in Portugal, the Qtek 1010 back in 2002 with Microsoft and we have been consolidating our strategy”, said Zeinal Bava.

TMN is the market leader in terms of smartphones in Portugal, having consolidated its leadership with the launch of these four new devices. “We believe that smartphone sales will keep growing, being one of the major growth drivers of data traffic in Portugal”, added PT’s CEO.

Zeinal Bava also highlighted TMN’s strategy of massification of this type of mobile devices by launching its first low-cost device – TMN Bluebelt – aiming to boost the growth of the smartphone market. PT’s chief executive explained that TMN has conducted several “device clinics” with its customers mainly in terms of software, as in the case of smartphones customers make their choices each time more as a function of software, not of hardware.

According to Jacques-Etienne
Grandjean, general
manager, Communication
Sector, Western Europe,
Microsoft, "smartphones
represent circa 50%
of mobile phones
worldwide"

Windows Mobile 6.5
One of the big novelties of this new version from Microsoft is MyPhone, a service entirely developed in Portugal by Microsoft’s Mobile Technology Research and Development Centre. MyPhone is a free service to help users manage and protect their contents and important information kept on their mobile phones, from contacts to agenda schedules through the creation of a backup and the synchronisation between MyPhone and the internet of contacts, SMS and MMS messages, photos, tunes and other contents.

Windows Mobile 6.5 also differentiates itself for the Windows Marketplace for Mobile, a mobile application store that may be shared by millions of users.

On purchase of a Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone, the professional and entertainment sides may be conciliated in a harmonious way, as the new operating system allows the user to be connected to his contact networks in permanence. Windows Mobile 6.5 delivers a new access experience to Windows Live, making it easy to share contents over virtual social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, My Space and Flickr. Also Internet Explorer, built upon an Adobe Flash interface, delivers a fully innovative browsing experience. With new optimised Outlook Mobile, it became possible to manage simultaneously multiple email accounts. Microsoft Office Mobile allows editing Word, Excel or Powerpoint files more effectively.

The launch of the first Windows Phone-based devices is the result of a combination of three key factors, which are not only at the root of TMN’s leadership position in this segment, but also constitute the root of innumerous changes recently introduced in the sale of this type of devices in Portugal: more competitive offer, price reduction and provision of high-value services.
