Portugal Telecom took another step towards the concretion of the Next-Generation Networks project, by signing a contract with the North-American multinational Corning Incorporated for the development, testing and implementation of Next-Generation Networks in Portugal.
Zeinal Bava is quite confident about the North-American company, world-leading supplier of fibre-optic solutions with a strong commitment to R&D. PT’s chief executive officer believes that this partnership will add significant value for the project of deployment of a fibre-optic network in Portugal which will replace the current multimedia data transmission supported on copper wire (ADSL) or cable.
The chief executive officer of Corning demonstrated his satisfaction for the partnership established and ensured that the fibre-optic technology will allow Internet users high-speed broadband access that will provide true high definition and 3D television experiences.

The main goal of Zeinal Bava is quite clear: “We want to give our customers, both residential and corporate, the best services in the marketplace”.
The agreement was signed at the end of last week, during a visit of Zeinal Bava to the city of Corning, located 400 km northeast of New York.
This contract is the consequence of a protocol signed recently by PT and other telecommunications providers with the Portuguese government to implement Next Generation Networks in Portugal.
The implementation of the project will take approximately five years, according to Luís Alveirinho, one of the project leaders counting from the moment of decision of optical fibre deployment for five million homes.

PT has found a global technological partner in this North-American company that holds a breakthrough technology enabling the fibre to be bent around tight corners with virtually no signal loss. Corning is a world-leading supplier in the development of components enabling the creation of systems for the electronics market, catalysers for carbon dioxide control, telecommunications, among others. Its chief executive officer is renowned for being the technology advisor of Barack Obama.
With approximately 25,000 employees all over the world, and revenues of circa six thousand million dollars, Corning Incorporated invests around 10 percent of its gross revenue in research, believing that it holds patents that will revolutionise communication in the next 20 years.
The company is practically unknown to the Portuguese, but is responsible for example for developing the bulb-shaped glass encasement for the incandescent lamp which enabled Thomas Edison and General Electric to provide affordable light to homes.
