The future of telecommunications depends directly on the evolution of wireless technologies. These solutions comprehend today 3G Long Term Evolution technology (LTE), the answer for the development of new services that promise to revolutionise communication experiences worldwide.

As to LTE investment, the question to be asked according to Zeinal Bava is: "It's not if, it's when…" |
This development route includes undoubtedly Portugal, especially through Portugal Telecom’s investment in this area. It is Zeinal Bava who said so earlier today at the LTE Forum 2009. But according to PT’s chief executive, LTE is not a mere technology, but a lever for new application development.
Resorting to LTE for 3G network upgrade, PT will be able to afford innovative experiences to its customers, providing them with faster data access speeds and new services anytime anyplace, with increased efficiency and higher performance. These conditions that enable Portuguese customers to enjoy this kind of offer are complemented by PT’s continued policy of making available devices such as smartphones at competitive prices, discloses Zeinal Bava.
According to a Cisco Report, the compound annual growth rate of mobile data traffic will amount to circa 125% and PT’s future will pass by promoting this growth so that customer usage trends, namely business customers, may improve.
The announcement was made today: the behaviour of the average Portuguese consumer indicates a significant propensity for acquiring and testing new services and devices, so there is ample reason for this type of investment to be attracted to Portugal, said PT’s chief executive. And he added: “We are believers…”, so the question to be asked should be: “It’s not if, it’s when…”.
Through this new technology, operators ensure 3G competitiveness over the next 10 years with increased spectrum efficiency, compared to 3G/HSPA networks. LTE will allow fixed and mobile broadband access and will be advantageous for both customers and operators. Capacity will increase and complexity as well as implementation and operation costs will decrease. This will result in a more extensive and better offering with higher cost efficiency.
The evolution of TMN’s services has put Portugal at the third position in terms of broadband penetration, a trend to be maintained. The high level of penetration of mobile broadband and PCs have contributed to this result, disclosed PT’s chief executive officer.
The aggressive strategy of PT’s mobile operator has enabled the company to reach a 50% market share in terms of mobile broadband and 53% for smartphones. TMN starts at the leading position in this second wave of growth, driven by data services, which was preceded by the first one, voice services, also led by TMN mainly after the launch of the first prepaid card in the world – MIMO.
