Sapo Cape Verde: one year later
Wednesday, April 15, 2009

Sapo Cape Verde should be congratulated for its anniversary. The launch of Sapo’s internationalisation took place one year ago, and it has continued to evolve since then. The content has kept increasing and the number of pagevews demonstrates this success. The mission of bringing together and of promoting the Cape Verdean world is fulfilled every day by means of a portal

The Cape Verdean community has a new meeting point on the Internet, Sapo Cabo Verde. This initiative, promoted by Portugal Telecom and by CV Telecom, aggregates all types of content about the country, registering today over 2 million pageviews and 100,000 monthly visits.

minister of Cape Verde,

According to the words of Abílio Martins, Board Member, PT, there are plenty of motives for a celebration on this date: “Today is a very special day for the sapo.cv portal not only because it celebrates its first anniversary, but also for the successes achieved in just 12 months. Today, Sapo Cape Verde is indispensable in day-to-day life of Cape Verdeans and this is due to the partners involved. It is a driver of the information society and of the digital world. Therefore, CV Telecom “rejoices for being part of the project”, disclosed Pires Correia, CEO, CV Telecom.

On the other hand, “CV Multimédia understood the potential of the sapo.cv project from its inception and one year after its implementation, the proposed goals were clearly met”, said the CEO.

made known a few potentialities
of the portal on the launch day

This is a symbolic project for Sapo. “It was the first step towards the internationalisation of the Sapo portal, and its fast and solid position on the Cape Verdean market has inspired us to launch other portals in Africa.

More than just aggregating content, the portal fulfilled a social function at the same time by supporting several initiatives such as the SOS Children’s Villages, GOIP Woman, INDP – project for the preservation of sea turtles, among others.

In terms of content, the sapo.cv portal has been growing, extending its offering in terms of content: news, blogs, videos, photos, mail, messenger, search, music, tourism, gastronomy, astrology – information that meets the interests and expectations of Cape Verdeans worldwide.

As it is a day for celebration, it is marked by the launch of a new service – Sapo Sites (http://sites.sapo.cv) for the business market in Cape Verde. Through a partnership with the Yellow Pages, new online pages for small and medium enterprises without a website may be created in this way.

And as the goal is to keep growing, sapo.cv recently launched six new thematic channels that demonstrate the best in the country:

  • Sapo Travel – channel on tourism and travel in Cape  Verde, with information on lodging, hotels, restaurants, points of interest, photos and videos of every island in Cape Verde, in Portuguese and in English;
  • Sapo Gourmet – website with updated information on restaurants, recipes and videos about the Cape Verdean gastronomy;
  • Sapo Astroloy – channel with entertaining content, focused on astrology forecasts and features;
  • Main Stage – portal dedicated to the rhythms of Cape Verde, whose goal is to bring together the entire Cape Verdean music community, enabling its members to communicate among themselves and to see their works revealed, both in the home territory and overseas;
  • Online Radio Stations – website with online radio stations allowing to listen to radio stations from Cape Verde worldwide;
  • Sapo Kids – A portal for the younger generation, with content adapted for children, through local partnerships specific of this project.
