The major Portuguese telecommunications provider announced today an investment in fibre optic networks, which will provide the Portuguese with a completely innovative television and internet experience, by enabling high-speed, high-quality services. PT proposes to provide one million homes with optical fibre until the end of 2009. This way, it will be able to meet its goals in terms of growth and leadership in the home market in every area of activity.

Next Generation Networks will enable new services, leveraging also the development of a certain type of industries, being a factor of attraction of investment for sectors requiring high-speed transmission. In terms of communication, residential consumers, SMEs and large businesses will be able to enjoy enhanced quality and flexibility.

The implementation of Next Generation Networks will still be dependent on the regulatory framework, which is not yet defined. For the time being, there is only a “Report on the Regulatory Approach to Next Generation Networks”, published by ICP-ANACOM in February 2009. PT will launch its service offering on a fibre optic network based on these guidelines.

With the implementation of this project, PT expects domestic CAPEX (capital for investment in the acquisition or improvement of physical assets) to increase by 10 percent, considering the amount of Euro 650 million defined for 2009.
