Accompanying the situation in Madeira from the very first moment, Portugal Telecom provided additional technical and human means to re-establish, as quickly as possible, normality in wireline, mobile, satellite and submarine cable communications so as to ensure the effective intervention of the authorities and Civil Protection as well as communications inside and outside the Region to keep the populations from being isolated.
Last Saturday, PT created a Task Force whose goal was to re-establish communications in Madeira. This team, comprising all technical areas of the company, was reinforced with 200 people in the Region and on the Continent to ensure the maintenance of mobile and wireline communications, acting in coordination with the Regional Government and Civil Protection.
Sunday, PT sent additional technical and human means to Madeira – 400 kg of telecommunications equipment – where its local technical team was already reinforced, as well as satellite telephones trying to re-establish communications in the locations most affected by the storm.
The prompt activity of the teams enabled the recovery of 85% of the mobile and wireline communications of the island. The remaining 15%, still without communications, are located on the North Coast of the island, places whose access is still conditioned or even cut.
Portugal Telecom is making every effort to ensure normality in terms of communications in Madeira, reinforcing its commitment to the Region.
