Sapo, surfing in Portuguese for the last 15 years
Monday, September 06, 2010
SAPO was born on 4 September 1995. It is 15 years building a story of success and leadership, based on a relationship of proximity between SAPO and the Portuguese.

SAPO (stands for Portuguese Pointer Server) was created by six students from the University of Aveiro on 4 September 1995. From a small set of webpages, SAPO became the major internet portal in Portugal and jumped to internationalisation, taking the Portuguese language overseas. Over 15 years, it has built a story of success and leadership, based on a relationship of proximity between SAPO and the Portuguese.

As the result of the work and dedication of the whole team, SAPO grew, organised itself and became professional. Its bet on tools and contents especially conceived in Portuguese for the Portuguese reality are worth more than 900,000 visits to the SAPO homepage alone each day, contributing to the consolidation of its leadership in Portugal.

Betting on innovation, the community and the future and seeking to take Portugal overseas, SAPO bet on internationalisation. 2008 saw the launch of Sapo Cape Verde and Sapo Angola portals and of the Sapo Mobile service in Brazil. Sapo Mozambique was launched in 2009, being currently planned the expansion to other countries. “The decision of jumping to internationalisation was taken in 2008, when Sapo was present in Cape Verde, Mozambique and Angola, but the main goal is to keep growing overseas”, explained Abílio Martins, Board Member, PT.

The bet on mobile platforms is another SAPO goal. According to PT’s Board Member, the company “is very focused on the mobile area, on the production of application widgets either for the Android OS or for the Iphone” and stressed “the great power of differentiation” of TMN’s mobile phones and of Meo as an operator.

SAPO’s success story was built with the commitment of a team working every day to bring Portugal closer to you. Congratulations to SAPO.
