Wednesday, September 15, 2010
After the international leap to Cape Verde, Mozambique and Angola, the SAPO portal arrives today in East Timor, in Tetum and Portuguese languages.
Portugal Telecom, in partnership with Timor Telecom, presents the new Sapo Timor portal - - www.sapo.tl – the on-line meeting point of the Timorese community worldwide. For the first time, the SAPO portal will have simultaneous versions in two languages, Tetum and Portuguese, maintaining these two languages alive in the Internet world.
With this bilingual launch, SAPO contributes to underpinning the teaching and promotion of the Portuguese language for the Timorese and at the same time ensuring an online window to the Timorese reality and access to the outside world in Tetum language.
The www.sapo.tl portal gathers the entire information on East Timor with production of own contents, located and adapted to the reality of the country, as well as contents from local partners. Apart from promoting Internet use as a knowledge and teaching tool, the new portal aims to underpin the development of local multimedia contents by creating a Timorese team dedicated to the management, production and translation of contents for the new portal.

Portugal Telecom’s investment in Timor
2009 saw the presentation of a strategic plan, together with Timor Telecom, defining a new phase with the development and implementation of new services, technological solutions and a new brand. Such plan reflected PT’s commitment to East Timor and aimed to underpin its investment in Timor’s telecommunications.
Through its subsidiary Timor Telecom in 2003, PT pioneered the investment in the country, having developed the entire telecommunications infrastructure and system from scratch. A robust and diversified shareholder structure has made the operator a strategic asset for the Timorese economy, underpinning the access to communications an expanding its customer base exponentially, which is expected to reach 500,000 by year-end.
The reinforcement of the telecommunications infrastructure through the expansion of the fixed and mobile coverage, namely through the expansion of the 3G coverage to all conurbations, which will be available to more than 85% of the population by year-end; the investment in broadband, not only in terms of coverage, but also of sophistication of offers and the commitment to implement the undersea cable, which will enable East Timor’s connection to the international data network are an example of the commitment assumed with the Timorese society, now consolidated with the launch of Sapo Timor.
