Monsanto transmitter goes fully digital
Wednesday, February 01, 2012
Portugal Telecom proceeded to another stage of digital switchover along the coastal track by switching off the analogue transmitter of Monsanto and some relays along the coast.

Portugal Telecom switched off this morning the analog signal transmitter of Monsanto and the relays of Areeiro, Caparica, Carvalhal, Barcarena, Cheleiros, Estoril, Graça, Montemor-o-Novo, Odivelas, Sintra, Malveira, Sobral de Monte Agraço, Coruche and Cabeção, thus continuing the analogue shutdown along the country's coastline.

This is considered the largest switch-off, as it covered an area with two million people, living in 850 thousand homes. Of these, 80% use pay-TV, which means that the switch-off affects about 170 thousand families, which had to be ready to receive television broadcasts in digital format.

It should be recalled that, although the analogue signal was switched off only today, the Monsanto transmitter has been broadcasting in digital format for about a year.

The shutdown on the coast of Portugal will be completed on February 23, with the transition to the digital signal in towns further north. The second phase of the analog shutdown, whose beginning is marked for 22 March, includes the Azores and Madeira Islands and the third, scheduled for April 26, will shut down the analogue transmitters and relays in the rest of the territory.
